Short answer: You can enrol in the CFP® pathway at 18 after Class 12. To be certified, you also need a graduate-level qualification, Indian residency, all courses and exams completed, relevant work experience, and a commitment to FPSB’s ethics standards.
Enrolment vs certification
People often confuse the two. Starting the pathway has a low bar; earning the right to use the CFP® marks has a higher one.
To enrol
- Minimum age 18
- Class 12 (HSC) or equivalent
To be certified
- A graduate-level qualification
- Indian residency
- Completion of all three specialist courses, the financial plan assessment and the CFP® exam
- Experience: three years unsupervised, or one year supervised, relevant experience in the finance industry
- Ethics: completion of the FPSB Professional Ethics module and adherence to FPSB’s code and standards
Can students start early?
Yes. Because enrolment only needs Class 12, many students begin during graduation and complete the experience requirement after starting work.
Is there a faster route?
FPSB India’s Fast Track pathway lets eligible professionals skip the three specialist courses and go straight to Integrated Financial Planning, the Financial Plan Assessment and the CFP® Exam. Eligibility needs the right education — and, for degrees, experience too: professional qualifications such as CA (with articleship), CA Inter (with articleship), CFA (USA), CPA (USA), CMA (USA/India), CS (India), ACCA (UK), CAIIB plus graduation or Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India qualify directly, while a postgraduate degree in Economics, Commerce or Finance, or a specified full-time MBA/PGDM, qualifies only with 3+ years of financial-planning experience. Experience alone does not qualify. FPSB India verifies documents (₹5,000) before registration. Try our Fast Track eligibility checker.
After certification
CFP® professionals complete continuing professional development each year (FPSB India lists 15 hours annually) to keep the certification active.
