What is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®)?
CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®) certification is an internationally recognised professional certification in personal financial planning. In India it is awarded by FPSB India to candidates who meet four requirements — education, examination, experience and ethics — showing they can build integrated financial plans covering investments, retirement, tax, risk and estate.
Who should pursue it?
- Graduates who want a client-facing career in financial planning or wealth management
- Bankers and relationship managers who want to move from product conversations to planning conversations
- Insurance professionals and mutual fund distributors who want a broader planning perspective
- Career switchers looking for a structured, recognised entry point into personal finance
- Independent advisors who want a professional standard to anchor their practice
Eligibility
- To enrol
- Minimum age 18 and Class 12 (HSC) or an equivalent qualification.
- To be certified
- A graduate-level qualification, Indian residency, and completion of all three specialist courses, the CFP® exam and the financial plan assessment.
- Experience
- Three years of unsupervised or one year of supervised relevant experience in the finance industry.
- Ethics
- Completion of the FPSB Professional Ethics module and ongoing adherence to FPSB's code of ethics and practice standards.

- Financial Plan Assessment
- You prepare an integrated financial plan for an assigned case study. It is a separate component from the CFP® Exam, and the two can be taken in either order.
- CFP® Exam
- 3 hours; 50 multiple-choice questions in two sections — 25 standalone and 25 case-study questions. Taken online (proctored) or in person at DEXiT test centres. Held every other month: February, April, June, August and October. FPSB India does not publish a pass mark or pass rate for the CFP® Exam.

Skills you gain
The CFP® pathway builds 8 practical capabilities — each taught in a specific stage and used every day in client work.
- 01
Client discovery & goal setting
Run a structured first conversation: understand the family, income, assets, liabilities and attitude to risk, then turn vague hopes into specific, dated, costed goals.
Integrated Financial Planning
- 02
Cash flow, budgeting & goal-based planning
Build a household cash-flow picture, find the surplus that funds goals, and work out how much to save — and where — for education, a home or independence.
Integrated Financial Planning
- 03
Investment planning & asset allocation
Understand asset classes, risk and return, and mutual funds and other products, then build portfolios whose allocation fits each goal's time horizon and the client's risk profile.
Stage 1 · Investment Planning Specialist
- 04
Retirement income planning
Estimate what a client needs to retire, account for inflation and longevity, choose suitable retirement products, and design a sustainable way to draw income.
Stage 2 · Retirement and Tax Planning Specialist
- 05
Personal tax planning
Apply individual income-tax rules to salaries, investments and capital gains so that recommendations are judged on post-tax outcomes, not headline returns.
Stage 2 · Retirement and Tax Planning Specialist
- 06
Insurance & risk management
Calculate how much life and health cover a family really needs, tell protection apart from investment-linked insurance, and close the gaps that could derail a plan.
Stage 3 · Risk and Estate Planning Specialist
- 07
Estate & succession planning
Understand wills, nominations, trusts and succession so a client's wealth passes on smoothly — and know when to bring in a lawyer.
Stage 3 · Risk and Estate Planning Specialist
- 08
Ethical, client-first conduct
Put the client's interest first, disclose conflicts and costs, document suitability, and follow FPSB's code of ethics and practice standards throughout your career.

Frequently asked questions
What is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®)?
A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®) professional is someone certified by FPSB India (in India) to build integrated financial plans covering investments, retirement, tax, insurance and estate planning. CFP® certification is an internationally recognised professional certification, awarded to candidates who complete the required education, pass the exams, meet the experience requirement and commit to FPSB's ethics standards.
Is the CFP® certification recognised internationally?
Yes. CFP® certification is recognised in 29 territories worldwide through the Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB) network, including India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Japan and China, and is widely regarded as the gold standard certification in financial planning. More than 236,300 CFP® professionals hold it worldwide, including 3,534 in India, according to FPSB India. Each territory awards the certification locally — in India, through FPSB India — against one common global standard.
How do I become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® in India?
Enrol with FPSB India (from age 18 after Class 12), complete the CFP® education — the three specialist courses and Integrated Financial Planning on the Regular pathway, or the Fast Track route if you hold an eligible qualification — then pass the financial plan assessment and the CFP® exam. To be certified you also need a graduate-level qualification, relevant work experience (three years unsupervised or one year supervised) and a commitment to FPSB's ethics standards.
Who is eligible to start the CFP® pathway in India?
You can enrol from age 18 after completing Class 12 or an equivalent qualification. To receive the certification, you also need a graduate-level qualification, Indian residency, relevant work experience and completion of all courses and exams.
How many levels are there in the CFP® pathway?
The regular pathway has four stages: three specialist courses (Investment Planning; Retirement and Tax Planning; Risk and Estate Planning) followed by Integrated Financial Planning, which includes a financial plan assessment and the CFP® exam.
Does CFP® certification let me give investment advice?
No certification on its own grants regulatory permission. In India, offering investment advice for a fee generally requires registration with SEBI as an Investment Adviser, which has its own qualification and certification requirements. Check current SEBI regulations before offering advisory services.
Can I attend CFP® classes online?
Yes. Candidates can choose self-study or instructor-led education through an FPSB India Authorized Education Provider. Most providers run live online CFP® classes, and many also offer classroom or hybrid batches — compare them on our CFP® classes page.
How much does the CFP® course cost in India?
There are two parts. FPSB India's own fees come to ₹1,20,500 + GST in core fees on the Regular pathway (registration, course material and exams for three specialist courses, IFP material, Psychology in Financial Planning, the Financial Plan Assessment + CFP® Exam bundle and initial certification) and ₹84,000 + GST on the Fast Track pathway. Education provider training fees are extra if you choose instructor-led study. Annual renewal is ₹11,000 + GST.

Professional qualifications — CA (with articleship), CA Inter (with articleship), CFA (USA), CPA (USA), CMA (USA/India), CS (India), ACCA (UK), CAIIB plus graduation or Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India — qualify directly. A postgraduate degree in Economics, Commerce or Finance, or a specified full-time MBA/PGDM, qualifies only with 3+ years of financial-planning experience. Experience alone does not qualify. FPSB India verifies documents before registration.
What is the CFP® exam pattern?
The CFP® Exam is a 3-hour exam with 50 multiple-choice questions — 25 standalone and 25 case-study based. It is taken online (proctored) or at DEXiT test centres and is held in February, April, June, August and October. The Financial Plan Assessment is a separate written component.
What is the passing mark for the CFP® exam?
FPSB India does not publish a pass mark or pass rate for the CFP® Exam. Focus on thorough preparation across all planning areas and practise case-study questions under timed conditions.
